What we paint, and what each job involves

From a single feature wall to a full property repaint, here is what to expect from each type of job so you know what to ask for.

Interior painting

Walls, ceilings, doors, skirting boards and trims, with fresh colour throughout the rooms you choose.

Kitchens, bathrooms and laundries need paint made for humid rooms. If a ceiling has water stains, the leak should be fixed first, then the stain sealed before repainting so it does not show through.

Exterior painting

Facades, fences, render and other weather-exposed surfaces.

Exterior paint fails mostly from poor preparation, not poor paint. Washing, scraping loose paint, treating mould and repairing cracks come before any colour goes on.

Roof painting

Cleaning, repairing and repainting tired-looking roof surfaces.

Rust, loose fixings and damaged tiles should be dealt with before painting. Safe roof access also affects how a job is planned and quoted.

Commercial painting

Offices, shops and other business properties.

Tell us your trading hours and any areas that must stay accessible, so timing can be planned around your business.

The finish is only as good as the preparation

Most peeling, bubbling and patchy paint traces back to what happened before the first coat. Good preparation takes time, which is why it is often the difference between a paint job that lasts and one that needs redoing.

We talk through your project and explain the scope before giving you a tailored quote, so you know what is included. We also take care of the place you live or work in: tidy workmanship and respect for your space.

  1. Clean the surface so paint can grip: dust, grease, mould and salt all stop paint bonding.
  2. Scrape and sand loose or flaking paint back to a firm edge.
  3. Fill holes and cracks, then sand them smooth.
  4. Spot-prime stains and bare patches, and prime where one surface meets a very different one.
  5. Mask and protect floors, fixtures and furniture.
  6. Apply each coat and allow the drying time the paint label calls for.

Painting in Adelaide conditions

Local weather and soil affect how paint performs. These are the things worth knowing before you plan a job.

Summer sun and heat

Strong UV fades exterior colour and slowly breaks paint down, and dark colours on north and west facing walls suffer most. Painting in direct midday heat can make paint dry too fast and leave lap marks, so outdoor work is best planned around shade and cooler hours.

Salt air near the coast

Homes close to the coast, around suburbs like Henley Beach and Glenelg, collect salt that attacks paint and metal. Washing the salt off before painting, and choosing a coating suited to coastal conditions, helps the finish last.

Reactive clay and cracking walls

Many Adelaide suburbs sit on clay soil that swells and shrinks with moisture, which can open cracks in walls and render. Hairline cracks can be filled and painted. Wide or growing cracks may be structural and are worth having assessed before painting over them.

Winter damp and mould

Damp in bathrooms, laundries and wardrobes can bring mould back through fresh paint. Paint does not fix a moisture problem, so deal with the cause first, such as ventilation or a leak, then use a mould-resistant finish where suitable.

What affects the price of a painting job

Every property is different, which is why we quote on the actual scope. These are the main things that move a price up or down.

  • Size and ceiling height. More wall area and taller ceilings mean more time and materials.
  • Condition of the surfaces. Peeling paint, cracks and stains need repair before painting.
  • Colour changes. Going from a dark colour to a light one often needs extra coats.
  • What is being painted. Doors, trims, windows, render and fences each take different amounts of work.
  • Access. Two-storey homes and roofs may need scaffolding or other safe access.
  • Paint and number of coats. Better products and more coats cost more up front and usually last longer.
  • An occupied property. Working around furniture and daily life can change the schedule.
  • Photos versus an inspection. Photos help, but an inspection gives the most accurate quote.

Common questions

Is the quote really free?

Yes. There is no upfront charge for a quote and no obligation to go ahead.

Do you paint both homes and businesses?

Yes. We handle residential and commercial projects, including interiors, exteriors and roofs.

Where do you work?

We are based in Brooklyn Park, Adelaide, South Australia. Tell us your suburb in the form and we will confirm we can help.

Do I need to know the size of my project?

No. Choose Not sure yet and we will work out the scope with you.

How long does a painting job take?

It depends on the size, the condition of the surfaces and, outdoors, the weather. As a rough guide, a single room can often be done in a day or two, while a whole-house interior or exterior usually takes several days to a couple of weeks. We will give you a realistic timeframe with your quote.

How should I prepare before the painters arrive?

Take down pictures and small items, clear access to the walls, and tell us about pets, alarms or anything fragile. For large furniture, we agree how it is handled when we discuss the job.

When is the best time to paint the outside of a house in Adelaide?

Mild, dry weather works best, which in Adelaide is usually spring and autumn. Paint needs a suitable temperature to dry and cure properly, and the label on the tin lists the range. Very hot, windy or wet days cause problems, so it is better to reschedule than to rush.

How do I compare painting quotes?

Compare like with like. Check that each quote lists the areas to be painted, the preparation included, the number of coats, the type of paint, who supplies it and the timeframe. A much lower price can mean less preparation or fewer coats. You can also ask any business for its ABN and insurance details.

Could my older home have lead paint?

Homes built before the 1970s may have lead-based paint. If your home is that age, mention it when you enquire. Dry sanding or scraping lead paint can spread toxic dust, so it should be tested and handled with the right method.
